Lo-Fi Photography: Art from Do-It-Yourself Chemistry and Physics provides a brief introduction to photographic theory and practice at a basic level, but with three unconventional features: ˆ Low-Fi: The book focuses on processes that require little in the way of elaborate image capture technology. As such, many of the processes used are historical. This approach ties in well with some contemporary currents in art photography, and it more visibly demonstrates important underlying chemical and physical concepts and principles. ˆ Do-it-Yourself (DIY): I concentrate, wherever possible, on home-made cameras and kitchen chemistry. ˆ Accessibility: The processes highlighted and the equipment required are inexpensive and can be carried out with no access to a full, photographic darkroom. Most of the processes require no darkroom at all, only a “dimroom.” While these techniques are artistically versatile and can be taken to a high level, basic and interesting results can be achieved with only a modest effort. Lo-Fi Photography contains how-to explanations of several photographic faimiliar processes, but often with a new twist, as well as a new photographic process described here for the first time. Detailed instructions are included for DIY cameras, including a low-cost view camera designed especially for this book.
